ARAB JEWS: NAVIGATING IDENTITY, CULTURE, POLITICS, AND SPIRITUALITY
Sunday February 18th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM EST
Price: $40
To many ears, the term Arab Jews sounds like a contradiction in terms. It is one of the true misfortunes of modern cultural history that these two identities have come to be seen as in conflict. In fact, Jews have long been an integral part of Arab societies, in an ever-shifting and mostly harmonious cultural dialogue with the other religious traditions of the Middle East for millennia. Because Jewishness has come to be associated largely with the Ashkenazi culture of (white) European Jews, the richness and diversity of Judaism's expression in the Arab context remains largely unacknowledged and underappreciated. This workshop aims to close that gap by exploring and celebrating the many facets of Arab Jewish identity.
INTRODUCTION TO JUDAISM
When: Sunday February 25th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM EST
Price: $40
Ask two Jews for their definition of Judaism and you'll get three answers. It's an old joke, but one containing a lot of truth: at the heart of Judaism is a willingness to ask old questions newly, including an inquiry to the very nature and meaning of the religion itself. This Introduction to Judaism course, ideal for newcomers or anyone seeking a deeper understanding, will delve into the fundamental tenets, beliefs, and practices that form the foundation of this ancient monotheistic faith, as well as an overview of how these traditions developed across time and the many locations where Judaism has found its diverse expressions.
